MIDDLE SCHOOL LEARNING CENTERS

The Learning Centers at T.R. Pollicita and Ben Franklin Middle Schools offer a toolkit for underperforming students – tutors, mentors, healthy food, and regular exercise.

Tutors are advanced placement or honors students from Jefferson High School.  They offer one-on-one help and serve as role models to the younger students.

Mentors – also Jefferson students, skilled in counseling techniques -- assist the middle school pupils with their personal, family or social issues.

Students get healthy sandwiches, fruits and drinks every day at no charge.

CEI is working with the Kinesiology Department at San Francisco State University to design a custom physical fitness program for both schools.  Students tested for their strength, flexibility, endurance and body composition.  Professors and graduate students at San Francisco State are using the results to develop individualized fitness regimens for each middle school participant.

Students who engage in regular physical activity tend to feel better about themselves.  They are more attentive and engaged at school.  They demonstrate better behavior and better grades.

More than a half of the students who attended the Learning Center at Pollicita last year improved in English and more than a quarter improved in math.

doing better....
I can just
feel it. School
is more
fun now.”
