JEFFERSON LEARNING CENTERCEI has operated the Learning Center as an after school program at Jefferson for five years. It offers a quiet place to work, tutors to help with homework, computers and healthy snacks. It serves more than 100 students, including the varsity basketball team. Eligibility used to be a big issue in Jefferson sports. The basketball team usually lost half its players when the first report card came out. Since they were required to study together in the Learning Center, only one boy has dropped off the team. Most of the students in the Learning Center are required to be there because they haven’t been doing well in class. But it’s open to any student who wants to come. It is set up and managed by students. Advanced placement or honors students provide our one-on-one tutoring. They offer special help to students who are having trouble passing the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). The Learning Center is open from 3-6 p.m. four days each week during the school year. |
