WHY WE DO IT

Jefferson High School is 97% minority and currently scores a “3” on the California State Academic Performance Index (API).  By comparison, Westmoor High School, the other high school in Daly City, scores an “8.”

Pollicita and Ben Franklin Middle Schools, the two principal feeder schools for Jefferson High School, both score just a “4” on the AP scale of 1 to 10.

On the average, students coming into Jefferson are reading at a sixth grade level.

About half the students at the two middle schools are eligible to receive free or reduced lunches, a poverty indicator.  At Jefferson, more than 75% of students are eligible.

About 26% of Jefferson High students are overweight, about the same as Pollicita Middle School.  More than 35% of the students at Ben Franklin Middle School are overweight, according to the State Physical Fitness Test results.

More than 41% of Jefferson students are “not in the healthy fitness zone” in terms of aerobic or lung capacity.  Only 25% can pass all six of the State Fitness standard tests.

Being overweight during the teen years has been associated with poor academic performance, as well as increased likelihood of depression and lowered self-esteem.
